Fr. Miguel Betancourt, Pastor
Father Miguel Betancourt was born in Puerto Rico, the oldest of three children and ordained a priest April 21, 2001. He received his Master in Divinity from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico and his License in Sacred Scriptures from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, Italy. Previous to coming here he was Scripture professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. He is a full-time Professor and Formation Advisor at The St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity and is the pastor of our parish. When asked what he likes best in his work he responded, "I love to be with the people."
Fr. Alberto Curbelo, Parochial Vicar
Father Alberto was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico and has two brothers and two sisters. One of his sisters, Sor Maria Flor is a Cloistered Dominican. Father Alberto studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical University of Puerto Rico and has served as Pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Puerto Rico. When asked about his ministry, he said that he liked working with young people. He is the parochial vicar of the parish.
Isaac Alderman, Assistant to the Pastor
Isaac grew up near Buffalo, NY, and then lived in Southern California for eight years before moving to St. Paul with his wife, Christina. He is a graduate of Houghton (NY) College and the St. Paul School of Divinity. In addition to being Fr. Miguel's assistant, he is an adjunct professor of theology at the University of St. Thomas.
Deacon Steve Maier
Deacon Steve Maier grew up in the western Wisconsin town of Balsam Lake. He is the middle child in a family of seven. He attended the University of Wisconsin –Stout where he earned a BS degree in Industrial Science Education. He works full time as an operations manager for Target. Steve was ordained a deacon by Bishop Lee Piché on September 19th, 2009. While studying at the St. Paul Seminary, he completed an internship at Dorothy Day Center, and was chaplain at Woodwinds Hospital and Totem Town. He has helped advise, coordinate and lead youth trips to Steubenville Conferences throughout the United States. His current outreach ministry is Chaplain for Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury. Deacon Steve and his wife Lynn live in W. St. Paul and have one child, a daughter, Caitlin, who is a college student.
Sr. Joan Fink, Parish Minister
Born and raised in West St. Paul, Sr. Joan went to grade school at St. Matthew's and graduated from St. Agnes High School. The following August she was bound for Mankato where she joined the School Sisters of Notre Dame. After a year of candidature, she was sent to begin her teaching career as a middle school teacher. Summers were spent attending classes to get her BA and MA degrees. How many years she has served as a SSND sister we're not telling, but 25 of them were spent as the principal of several parish schools. Since 1997 Sr. Joan has worked here as a parish minister with emphasis on visiting hospitals, nursing homes and the homebound.
Eva Garnica, Coordinator Hispanic Community
As Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry, Eva Garnica works with the pastor, leaders of the Spanish-speaking ministry team, members of the staff, and the parish pastoral council in the continued development of the Spanish-speaking ministry at St. Francis de Sales of St. Paul. Eva was born in Mexico City, growing up in a family where family togetherness is important. The fifth child in her family, she has seven siblings, five women and two men. She graduated as an accountant and has served as an auditor. Eva came to America in 1998 with her husband of 23 years, Eduardo Vega. They have three children, Christopher (age 23 and works as a chef at a private club), Dana (age 18 and attends Cretin-Derham Hall High School), and Alin (age 14, attended SFSJUS and now attends Cretin-Derham Hall High School). She began working for the parish in 2004.
Steve Carter, Business Administrator
Steve grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he attended his parish grade school and Marquette University High School. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and worked for IBM for 24 years in Chicago, New York, and Rochester, Minnesota. Steve and his wife Joanne moved to the St. Paul area in 1998 and have three children; Anna, who works for NET Ministries in West St. Paul, Sarah, who lives in Mendota Heights, and Joseph, who is studying Architecture at the University of Minnesota. Steve continues to be active at his parish, Holy Trinity in South St. Paul, as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Religious Education teacher, and assistant organist.
Pam Gripman, Administrative Assistant
Administrative Assistant Pam Gripman sits at the front desk in the parish office. She will most likely be the first person you see or talk to when you visit or call. Pam worked at United Airlines as a sales representative. In 1993 she was transferred to Minnesota, coming from Arlington Heights, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago. Pam is a parishioner at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul.
